Of course, this does not mean SMP will be instantly available in VR, and it may be weeks or months until people understand Hydrogen's source code well enough to enable basic functionality in VR, and may be much longer before the major bugs are squashed. Among the most obvious uses for this repo - HDT-SMPVR! At last! We are enormously fortunate to get this source code at all, and its release should mean both that Hydrogen no longer has to run around repairing DLLs and that further building upon Hydrogen's accomplishments should now be possible.

Whether this had any bearing on Hydrogen's decision, some 17 hours prior to this post, Hydrogen uploaded the above repo to Github. Aers (of SSE Engine Fixes) somehow managed to hexedit the new offsets into SMP, thereby unofficially updating it, and helpfully provided the community a script to put this power in everyone's hands as well as a quick attempt at a VR version of SMP for me to personally test - as expected, this refused to load, again dashing hopes of seeing SMP in VR.

Core mods like SKSE frequently release an update within hours or days, but SMP was taking as long as it ever had. This past week, Bethesda released another Skyrim update, once again breaking all DLL-based mods. Shizof's CBP is a triumph of video game physics, but due to the nature of Skyrim modding, it was unlikely to enable all the other mods that relied on SMP. March came and went with no word, and some of us were losing hope. Luckily, last September several Chinese Skyrim fans revealed that Hydrogen had been convinced to release SMP's source code, but needed six months to clean everything up. Already exhausted, Hydrogen officially releasing a VR version of SMP looked unlikely.

Hydrogen had no headset and waning interest in continuing support for this project (remember, the DLLs break on every update, something that could only be alleviated had Microsoft been smarter about how it originally envisioned shared libraries or Bethesda had put more effort into absorbing the enabling SKSE mod despite that team's employment clauses). Animated cloaks for everyone!Įxcept us VR players, of course.

After some delay and a switch from Havok to Bullet (mostly due to Microsoft's questionable licensing policy), Hydrogen released "Simple Mesh Physics," or HDT-SMP for SSE. The full story: HydrogenSaysHDT is a Chinese modder known for releasing "HDT Physics Extensions," an Oldrim mod that enabled physics on things Bethesda didn't bother with (i.e., body mesh physics). TL DR: It might be a while until SMP gets fully ported to VR, but a wider range of mods and physics interactions should eventually be possible! Hold tight!
